On April 8, 2018, international news outlets reported on the use of chemical weapons in Eastern Ghouta, Syria. The World Health Organization released the following statement three days later: “According to reports from Health Cluster partners, during the shelling of Douma on Saturday, an estimated 500 patients presented to health facilities exhibiting signs and symptoms consistent with exposure to toxic chemicals.”
To give context: the long and bloody battle for Syria has waged for the last seven years and what began as a fight for freedom from the Assad regime has become a battleground mired by myriad rebel groups with conflicting interests and ideologies. Since September of 2015, the Russian Armed Forces have contributed significantly to Bashar al-Assad’s goal of reclaiming territory lost to various militant factions. But those various militant factions are, according to a recent study, comprised nearly three-quarters of either Islamists or jihadists.
This is not the first time during the war that Assad has been accused of using chemical
weapons, and this is also not the first time that in the aftermath the media and punditry have called for the use of military force. Of course, our Tweeter-in-Chief weighed in, responding to a statement by the Russian U.N Ambassador stating that any engagement by the U.S. against the Assad government, “could lead to grave repercussions.” And, as he so eloquently puts it, President Trump told Russia to “get ready” as the strikes would be “nice and new and ‘smart!’” However, the icing on the cake was when, in a feat of stunning irony, he stated, “You shouldn’t be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!”
Trump’s statement comes right into line with the suggestions of the pundits and mainstream media, as well as several prominent allies, who are hot-and-ready to strike against the Assad regime.
Despite previous investigations by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, no official investigation has begun — regardless of the claim by French President Emmanuel Macron that he ‘has proof’ that the latest allegations against Assad are true. As of yet, the Macron has not offered any evidence to substantiate this claim; however, he has stated that he is contemplating airstrikes.
No evidence has been presented by any independent body, yet the President of the United States is threatening a foreign nation with aggressive military action. As Russia is a nuclear armed state, the American bull may be about to enter a Syrian china shop and cause World War III.
Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria. Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and “smart!” You shouldn’t be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!
